Monkey Diaries

In an ancient city reclaimed by Sri Lanka’s forests, lives a unique species of monkey – toque macaques. Over the last fifty years scientist Dr Wolfgang Dittas has lived alongside them. He’s uncovered secrets about their families, friends and foes and is now revealing how these extraordinary monkeys are adapting to a modern world that is crowded with humans.

Valley of Flood and Fire

The seasonal changes of the Luangwa Valley are extraordinarily intense. Heavy rains transform the Luangwa River from a shallow channel into a majestic waterway where grass grows tall and streams fill with an abundant selection of creatures, providing plentiful food for many grazing mouths. It is a wetland paradise. But it is short lived. A relentless and crippling drought follows and lasts for a majority of the year; weakening all life, save for the predators who take advantage of this widespread fall. Shadowlands

From the sub-Antarctic to southern New Zealand, the SHADOWLANDS are a diverse group of habitats in the remote southern latitudes of our planet. Here high-stakes wildlife dramas play out in snow-capped fiords where saltwater mixes with fresh, where warm currents meet cold Antarctic waters. Here, the world’s most southerly bottlenose dolphins and the rare Fiordland crested penguins make their home, while Great white sharks patrol the coasts and on the ocean floor a mass migration of spider crabs getS under way. These creatures must be tough to endure the extreme weather here at the best of times, but increasingly unpredictable climate patterns are making their lives even harder. Those who are born in the cold southern seas need all their animal cunning to grow up and ensure their kind survives in the SHADOWLANDS.

Monkey Island

An ancient citadel once home to Sri Lanka’s kings has now been reclaimed by the jungle… and there’s a new dynasty in power: monkeys. The lives of the King Troop of toque macaques play out among the ruins. The macaques share this primate paradise with laid back langurs and secretive leaf monkeys, but as the island suffers the toughest drought in years, all are tested to their limits.
