Boss Shark

Scientists have little understanding of the social dynamics of great white sharks. Normally lone hunters, they congregate at certain times of the year and suddenly become social creatures. For the first time, shark experts Dr Riley Elliott and Kori Burkhardt host a thrilling competition unlike any other, aiming to uncover which male great white shark reigns as the alpha in the pack. This unique showdown tests the sharks’ speed, hunting prowess, and fearlessness to uncover the leader of the pack who will get first mating rights with the big females when breeding season begins. Throughout the competition five key sharks go head-to-head in a series of contests, while the massive females - up to twice the size of the males - watch and judge. Woodpeckers: The Hole Story

There are over 240 species of woodpeckers. They live on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Woodpeckers come in all shapes and sizes, each uniquely engineered for their particular lifestyles. Some are sap drinkers, others live exclusively in forests ravaged by fire. Others catch insects on the wing acting more like a swallow than a woodpecker. And still others drill deep into the bark of decaying trees using their spear like tongue to fish insects from deep in the cambium. WOODPECKERS: THE HOLE STORY pecks away at what makes woodpeckers so special. We will follow intimate stories of two very different families raising their young, explore woodpeckers’ unique evolutionary journey and the powerful role they play in every ecosystem they inhabit.

Wolves, lions, hyenas, meerkats and dolphins are born without the skills they need to hunt and survive. They must learn them all from their pack. Each individual must make their contribution - as a soldier, a leader or a hunter - but they must do it within a social minefield where life is dominated by sexual tension and power struggles. It’s not easy to live INSIDE THE PACK.

Cub Camp

Judy and Roger Stearns, ordinary people with a little bit of land and a lot of heart, run Black Bear Rescue Manitoba. Every spring they welcome in orphaned black bear cubs to their 10-acre facility. All of the cubs arrive deeply traumatized and alone, with some cubs being so young that they are blind and helpless. But with the round-the-clock care provided by the Stearns, including bottle feeding at all hours, these baby bears gradually recover and even thrive. As they grow, they develop distinct personalities, and learn the skills they need to survive. And, in the fall, the group of healthy and confident cubs are ready to return to the wilderness, having grown up under the safe wing of CUB CAMP.

Red Crabs Crazy Ants

Christmas Island is home to the yearly mass migration of red crabs. Each year many of the crabs fall victim to the alien yellow crazy ants. These ants release formic acid as they crawl over and around the crabs which, with no defence against the ferocity of the onslaught, become stressed and generally die within a few hours.
